Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) is seeking an extraordinary Attendance Coordinator to work in our school. BDEA is an innovative public high school whose mission is to engage young adults to build a vision for their future through supportive relationships and meaningful competency-based learning experiences. BDEA students are 16 to 23 years old and have previously attended traditional schools where they may have felt lost, unsafe, or disengaged. Upon entering BDEA, students are eager to succeed and flourish because they are listened to and respected for who they are and for the gifts they possess. Our students work with experienced faculty in an environment that blends strong academics and social emotional support so students can earn a Boston Public Schools diploma in a model that inspires critical and creative thinking, independent learning, and active citizenship.  As a competency-based school, BDEA does not have grade levels and serves students with different academic needs up to age 23, including those who are being promoted from middle school without being academically prepared for high school; those who have dropped out of high school and have decided to return to earn a diploma, and those who are unable to attend regular school hours due to health issues, full time work and/or full time parenting obligations. The school employs 60 full and part-time staff to work with 410 students and is governed by an active Board of Trustees. All employees of the school are expected to uphold the mission of the school to build a consistent, unified, anti-racist, inclusive community that stimulates greater student agency, engagement, and academic achievement.  

 

We are looking for a staff member who is committed to working with our students, who understands the lives of urban youth and who has a track record of working successfully with students who face academic and personal challenges. The Attendance Coordinator role is to provide support to staff, students and families, that will encourage a positive culture of school participation. 

Responsibilities

  1. Evaluate and look systemically at BDEA’s holistic student engagement practices, policies, programs and initiatives (ie YPI, HiSet, BL) to assess overall effectiveness and possible redesign or new strategies. 
  2. Collaboratively provide oversight of BDEA’s attendance policy in order to create a school culture that encourages strong student participation and attendance, including but not limited to the following responsibilities:
    1. Participate in monthly attendance monitoring meetings comprised of members who help to coordinate and support the implementation of a consistent BDEA attendance policy, review regular attendance reports in order to identify student case loads that need additional support or interventions
    2. Coordinate and oversee attendance letter distribution and documentation according to the BDEA attendance policy
    3. Create messaging materials that increase family and student engagement 
    4. Attend new student orientation to introduce one's role and set student expectations for strong BDEA attendance 
    5. In collaboration with Director of SST, for students that need specific interventions,  provide attendance interventions (ie. student agreement meeting, family meetings, home visits and phone calls home), log information in Connects according to protocols  
  3. Lead the student attendance and engagement committee, composed of staff and students, that coordinates the creation of incentives and celebration of strong student attendance (awards, incentives, luncheons etc). With support, coordinate and facilitate all student incentive events
  4. Support staff through trainings on how to utilize technology tools (ie talking points) that will support effective communication with  family and student
  5. Participate in all BPS attendance meetings, work closely with District Attendance Coordinator, 
  6. Conduct student and staff surveys to help improve and enhance BDEA’s whole school attendance practices
  7. Enter and update student data and information in Connects (Sales Force) and other BDEA systems to share and track information
  8. Attend student support and program meetings as needed 
  9. Participate in all professional development and whole school retreats and activities 
  10. Perform other related duties as requested by the Administrative Team

 

Terms: BTU, Full-time

As a Horace Mann Charter School, teachers and staff are paid a competitive salary in accordance with the Boston Public Schools. As a condition for employment, BDEA staff are required to sign an Election To Work Agreement (ETWA) annually, which details the terms and conditions for the work year at the school.  While the school generally follows the BPS calendar, it requires additional planning time before, after or during the year, as agreed upon in the ETWA. CFC hours are from 8:00 - 4:00 pm or 9:00 – 5:00 pm with 30 min lunch undisturbed. However, hours may vary according to student needs.  Program, department and committee meetings, and professional development take place on Wednesday and Friday generally between 1:30pm and 3:30pm



Qualifications 

Required:  

  • Associates degree
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Tech-savvy in various computer applications, pull and manipulate reports and spreadsheets, using Microsoft Office
  • Ability to create an environment which will promote individual growth and a positive self-image
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven experience working with young people in a respectful and caring manner 
  • Be student-centered and committed to coaching students towards success, devoting additional time if necessary
  • Have a commitment to working with the families of our students and with parenting students
  • Adhere to BDEA’s Non-Discrimination Policy (see below)

 

Preferred:  

  • Bilingual Spanish, Creole, other: a strong plus 
  • Associate Degree
  • Familiarity with students’ neighborhoods and safety issues
  • A sense of humor
