JOB TITLE: BPS/BTU Paraprofessional Mentor

DIVISION: Academics

OFFICE: Office of Educator Development and Leadership and Boston Teachers Union

REPORTS TO: Co-chairs of BTU/BPS Paraprofessional Professional Development Team

 

POSITION OVERVIEW: The mission of the mentoring program is to strengthen student learning and paraprofessional performance across the district with coaching and evaluation assistance. This is a stipended position offered to Boston Public School paraprofessionals. The position will reside in the Office of Human Capital in the Boston Public Schools, reporting to the Co-chairs of BTU/BPS Paraprofessional Professional Development Team.  

 

The BPS/BTU paraprofessional mentors will be responsible for 

 

  1. Serving as a primary mentor for paraprofessionals in their evaluations. Includes:
  • Observing paraprofessional
  • Providing feedback from observation
  • Communicating regularly with paraprofessional
  • Offering coaching 
  • Maintaining confidentiality between mentor and paraprofessional
  • Identifying professional development and other resources
  • Maintaining a trusting and professional relationship with paraprofessionals.
  • providing support in the areas in which the Paraprofessional Does not Meet standards on their evaluation. 
  • Counseling and other individualized supports as needed
  • Online or In person

 

  1. Providing feedback to administrator / principal on areas worked on with paraprofessional. May meet jointly with principal and paraprofessional, ( Online or In person)

 

  1. Attending evaluation and equity and other training relevant to the mentor role  and delivering guidance and training to paraprofessionals (Online or In person)

 

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:

 

Required:

 

  • Currently a Boston Public Schools Employee
  • Bachelor’s Degree not necessary, all must have either 48 college credits or have passed the Para Pro exam.
  • Minimum of 5 Years of Service in Boston Public Schools
  • Must have an evaluation rating of “Meets or Exceeds Standard” in all Dimensions of the evaluation.
  • Must have Grades K-0 to grade 12 Classroom experience 
  • Must have skill sets or experience relevant to classroom specific environment 
  • Must commit to attend Evaluation Training in first year in the role
  • Will be assigned up to two paraprofessionals
  • Will work up to 45hrs including the training / session may be broken up 
  • Ability to travel between multiple school sites
  • Comfort working in an evolving program
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
  • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:

  • Recommendation (2) by Principal / Administrator/ Teacher/Community person
  • Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools
  • Comfort interfacing with others
  • Effective time management skills to plan and schedule mentoring
  • Ability to create trusting relationship 
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team setting



UNION/MANAGERIAL/RESIDENCY REQUIRED: BTU 2 members only (residency not required)

 

COMPENSATION RANGE: Stipend - $1500
