Overview:
Founded in 1647, Boston Public Schools (BPS) is the oldest public school district in the country. With approximately 57,000 students from over 114 different countries, nearly 8,000 employees, and an annual budget of $973 million, BPS is the largest district in Massachusetts and one of the most diverse as well.
Currently BPS has 128 schools utilizing three food service delivery models. Forty six (46) schools have full service kitchens with full time cafeteria managers and subordinate staff. Seventy eight (78) schools are satellite kitchen sites receiving meals from an outside vendor, contracted by BPS. In the 2017-2018 school year four schools participated in a pilot program introducing a new model called “My Way Café”. In the 2018-2019 school year this pilot model will be expanded to an additional 26 schools. The My Way Cafe model is supported by a Central Distribution Center.

- Mission: offer students safe, wholesome, nutritious, enjoyable meals to fuel academic excellence
- Meals served: approximately 23,500 breakfasts and 35,600 lunches served daily; approximately 7 -8,000 after-school meals served daily; 22,000 total summer meals
- BPS utilizes Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which enables the district to provide free meals to all Boston students
Job Responsibilities: [vary upon assigned location]
- Reports to work on time; as scheduled
- Assists with Food preparation
- Prepares, serves and accounts for meals
- Cleans kitchen equipment and work area, including floor
- Set up serving line and serves meals in accordance with portion size
- Accurately fulfills school orders for shipment [pick, pack, ship]
- Assemble various types of food and shipment
- Mark/tag all packages shipped
- Unpacks supplies and assists with stocking dry storage shelves and/or refrigerator shelves
- Wash dishes, trays, flatware, pots, pans, utensils and dining tables
- Keep work environment clean at all times - maintains cleanliness of equipment, work area and flooring, in addition to work, preparation and break areas
- Ensure adherence to food safety and facility safety
- Perform quality control checks to ensure standards are met
- Communicates inferior products or procedures
- Able to work in team oriented environment
- Follow all safety and sanitation requirements
- Completes all other duties, as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or G.E.D preferred
- Able to accept instruction and work in a team environment
- Able to communicate effectively
- Physical: walking, standing, reaching above shoulder lever, stooping, lifting, carrying, bending and pivoting
- Capable to sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time
- Ability to follow direction well
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Flexible about tasks and able to multitask and maintain a high productivity level
- Reliable
- Capable of working full day in multi-temp environments for the entire shift without restrictions
- Strong ability to work collaboratively with a range of fellow workers
Terms: $15.00 per hour
