Division Overview:

The BPS ESOG Division ensures that the district places the elimination of disparities, particularly racial disparities, at the center of all of our instructional and operational work. Led by the Chief Equity and Strategy Officer the Division comprises vital departments: the Office of Equity, the Office of the Opportunity Gaps, the Office of Strategy and Innovation, and the Office of Retention, Cultivation, and Diversity. Together, these four offices ensures every department and every school rigorously realizes the district's comprehensive, ambitious, systemic strategic plan; aligns its work to the BPS Opportunity and Achievement Gap Policy; and designs and implements policies, programs, protocols, and curricula intentionally focused on meeting the needs and advancing the academic outcomes of students from historically marginalized groups.

 

Job Description: 

The Opportunity & Achievement Gap Intern supports the Opportunity Gaps Office Leadership Team of the Boston Public Schools, reporting to Dr. Yozmin Gay, Assistant Superintendent, Office of Opportunity Gaps.  The Opportunity & Achievement Gap Intern is responsible for providing support in key areas, performing key tasks to move programs/initiatives forward, and contributing to reports, research, and community-focused meetings to advance the mission of the Boston Public Schools. The Opportunity & Achievement Gap intern will serve in a junior role within the Office of Opportunity Gaps.

 

The Boston Public Schools Office of Opportunity Gaps aims to ensure every student in every classroom gets what they need. By ensuring effective implementation of the OAG Policy, Strategic Planning and Quality School Plans, the Office of Opportunity Gaps aims to focus exclusively on positive student outcomes. The purpose of this position is to build capacity and provide a through-line between CLSP practices, Anti Racist Conceptual Development, Racial Equity Planning Tool, Early Warning Indicator Systems, and School-based Equity Roundtables (BPS C.A.R.E.S). We firmly believe that if each school implements all identified practices with fidelity, every student, in every classroom will get what they need to thrive.

 

 

We are seeking applicants for two full-time Opportunity & Achievement Gap Interns for six months(35 hours per week). The co-op will support the office in performing a range of responsibilities, including:

 

Opportunity Gaps Support and Administration

  • Provide operations and project management support as needed for the execution of the equity and anti-racism professional learning, targeted programming, leadership development of coaching. 
  • Draft and manage routine communications to BPS stakeholders
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned

 

Data Management

  • Compile, manage and maintain spreadsheets, graphs, reports based on data collected
  • Facilitating data analysis for program reporting 
  • Note-taking for meetings and/or events as needed

 

Marketing, & Communications

  • Execute marketing and communications efforts which include ensuring a consistent, accurate, and compelling web presence; development of marketing materials (i.e. brochures, flyers, web pages, packets for partners/funders).
  • Create program materials, including Google Suites presentations, marketing materials, handouts incorporating strong design and brand elements.
  • Assist with talking points for meetings and events, and draft email communications as needed. 

Applicants with a passion for equity and inclusion, and an ability to relate well to people from a wide variety of backgrounds are preferred. Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, are a plus, but not required.

 

Opportunity & Achievement Gaps Interns will receive increasing responsibility as they master the essential functions of the job. The Office of Opportunity Gaps is eager to support our co-op students in developing new skills, prove their abilities, and rapidly expand their duties.

 

Qualifications:

 

The Office of Opportunity Gaps seeks undergraduates who have:

  • Demonstrated interest in civil rights, equity, and inclusion
  • Interest in education and/or employment law and related issues
  • Prior work experience in administration, educational, or other related settings
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with internal and external BPS stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and employ excellent judgment, exercise discretion, and maintain unwavering integrity

 

Training:

 

Opportunity Gaps co-op will receive training provided by our Director of CLSP, Executive Director of Targeted Programming, and other Boston Public School staff on a variety of topics, including:

  • Education and employment discrimination law, and related internal policies
  • Opportunity and achievement gaps in urban education
  • Operationalizing racial and other forms of equity in decision-making and policy-setting
  • Select topics in civil rights and education

Transportation: 12-minute walk from the Northeastern campus; accessible by public transportation (5-minute bus from Ruggles)

Wage Type: Hourly: $20.00 - $25.00

If the co-op student substantially increases their responsibilities, their hourly wage may be increased during the placement.

 

TERMS: Six months
