Reports to: Assistant Superintendent of Student Development and Advancement or designee

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support efforts of the Student Support Division around peer mediation and positive culture and climate as it relates to issues on social media and in the community
  • Collaborate closely with the department of Safety Services in providing support to students in response to community and school based incidents to ensure that students have access to both school and community based supports
  • Respond to school leaders need for support to mediate in school issues using restorative practices
  • Support BPS’s Division of Student Support in responding to issues of community violence in a timely fashion by collaborating with city partners including but not limited to BPD, VIAP, BPHC and the Mayor’s Office of Public Safety
  • Responds as directed, by Assistant Director of Intensive Student Support, to active scenes of community violence that involve BPS students to ensure that wraparound supports will be provided to students and families of BPS
  • Respond to school based incidents that may have potential impact on specific ongoing community conflicts to provide mediation and restorative practices 
  • Participate in weekly meetings with DA’s office, DYS, Roca, Youth Connect and the Mayor’s Office of Public Safety to ensure that students of BPS have access to community based supports and collaboration is occurring with holistic wraparound support services for students
  • Provide updates as needed to BPS leadership in regards to active incidents of community violence to ensure that students and families have access to needed supports
  • Conduct home visits meeting with family and other community based partners as needed 
  • Provide mediation in school for identified at risk youth
  • Work in collaboration with city agencies in providing trauma response for community based incidents involving BPS students
  • Collaboration with local and state agencies to allow for effective and relevant case management support of district’s students, while adhering to FERPA policies to maintain student confidentiality.
  • Create weekly reports that identify school based incidents along with community based incidents so as to inform deployment and response efforts
  • Work with Supervisor and team to ensure assignments and outreach records are up to date
  • Participate in trainings as directed and required

Qualifications - Preferred:

  • Experience with mediation between young people who have experienced community violence
  • Deep understanding of the longstanding and current landscape of Boston neighborhoods and communities
  • Familiarity with geography of the city and school locations
  • Understanding of and willingness to use social media to guide response efforts and violence prevention work
  • 8-10 years of experience working in community violence response work
  • Fluent in a language other than English
