The duration of the funding means the position is temporary and may last for one, two, or three years. Hired candidates may be excessed or non-renewed from the position for the following school year.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Health Education Instructional Coach is a two-year position supported by ESSER funds. 

 

The Office of Health and Wellness (OHW) plays a critical role in supporting schools in the implementation of the BPS Wellness Policy, a Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Approach, which is a national model to link learning and health. As a district, our mission is to actively promote the health and wellness of all students to support both their healthy development and readiness to learn. OHW is committed to supporting schools in their efforts to create safe, healthy and sustaining learning environments.  OHW provides professional development, tiered instructional coaching, assessment & data, program evaluation support, resource development and selection in the following areas: physical education, health education, social emotional learning, restorative practices, wellness councils, physical activity and health promotions. OHW is a part of the Academics Division.

 

In collaboration with the Health Education Director and Health Education Team, the Instructional Coach will work with BPS teachers and staff to support their implementation of high quality, standards-based PreK-12 Comprehensive Health Education.  The Instructional Coach will work directly with teachers/staff in schools by modeling high quality instruction in a variety of formats; offering collaborative and one-on-one coaching; and facilitating centralized professional development. The Instructional Coach will focus on enhancing teachers' ability to provide skills-based health education instruction across all topic areas utilizing National Standards, BPS Health Education Frameworks, Student Learning Outcomes, and standards-based curricular units.  Using best practices in peer-coaching, the Instructional Coach will work with Health Education teachers, as well as other teachers and staff who teach and support the delivery of Health Education across the District in one-on-one and small group settings to expand and refine their professional practices. The Instructional Coach will assist and support schools in their integration of health education in the school community and work with administrators and teachers to align their work with district priorities. The Instructional Coach will support the broader work of the Health and Wellness Department, including facilitating access to other resources pertaining to wellness policies, initiatives, and promotions in schools. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Will report to the Health Education Director and will  provide professional development and instructional coaching to teachers and staff on the implementation of high quality, skills and standards-based district-endorsed HE curriculum

  • Utilize best practice coaching models to work with teachers/staff in one-on-one settings; observe and model lessons; co-plan and co-teach lessons; and provide tailored feedback focused on continuous improvement of instruction; 
  • Work with teachers to ensure the alignment of their instruction to National Standards,  BPS HE Frameworks, Student Learning Outcomes, curricula and assessments;
  • Develop and deliver professional development focused on current best practices in HE and standards and skills based HE curriculum; 
  • Collaborate with  school-based teachers/staff, district, and key stakeholders to develop well-structured lessons and rigorous units across all HE topic areas;
  • Review student data to inform and guide work and adjust coaching practices and priorities as needed;
  • Support teachers with the development of professional practice and student learning goals, identify and cultivate artifacts to support the teacher effectiveness evaluation process;
  • Maintain a database of PD, IC, and TA support to schools, as well as help track community partners providing health education to be included in the department resource map;
  • Continuously improve professional knowledge and practice through self-guided inquiry and participation in professional development activities; stay current with best practices and research; share information and knowledge with schools through various means.

 

Assist those who are teaching and supporting the delivery of health education in their schools to establish and maintain safe & supportive learning environments, and help implement district wellness policies, procedures and initiatives

  • Communicate district wellness-related policies; work with administrators, teachers and school staff to help implement the requirements in the most effective way for the school
  • Work with teachers to ensure the alignment of instructional practices to support physical literacy, culturally and linguistically sustaining practices, and transformative social, emotional learning
  • Be an active member of the Office of Health and Wellness and support schools in their implementation of wellness-related policies and initiatives
  • Fully support the Health Education Team
  • Perform other related duties as needed

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors of Arts or Science in Health Education or related area 
  • 3-5 years experience teaching Health Education 
  • Massachusetts Teaching License in Health Education
  • Demonstrated evidence of exemplary teaching performance and skills in HE
  • Experience training or coaching teachers in the area of HE 
  • Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills with demonstrated ability to deliver professional development
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to plan strategically and implement all the components of a peer coaching model
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and propose appropriate solutions 
  • Strong organizational skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Experience working with a diverse adult and student population
  • Ability to travel between multiple school sites and work on a flexible schedule
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
  • An understanding of the principles of equity at multiple levels (e.g., racial, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, health, ability) and the need for antiracist policies and practices in research and evaluation. 
  • An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment. 
  • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.

 

PRFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Master’s Degree with 5 plus years teaching experience 
    • Experience working as an Instructional Coach
    • Experience working in a diverse setting within a school district
  • Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and social & emotional learning competencies 
  • Knowledge of BPS programs, funding, and partners (existing and potential)
  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in the following major languages: Spanish, Cabo Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese.

 

UNION/MANAGERIAL/RESIDENCY REQUIRED: UNION

 

COMPENSATION RANGE: Group I + 5% differential.
