Description

This vacancy is the result of temporary funding through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER). The duration of the funding means the position is temporary and may last for one, two, or three years. Hired candidates may be excessed or non-renewed from the position for the following school year.

 

Reports to: 

Headmasters/Principals/School Nurse/ Assistant Director Health Services

 

School Health Paraprofessionals assist in the non-professional aspects of the school health program as determined by the school nurse.  School health paraprofessionals service a variety of schools and travel is necessary. 

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the school nurse with mandated screenings, immunizations and physical examination preparations, weighing, measuring, and recording data on school health records.
  2. Acts as liaison between school personnel and family/community including home visits.
  3. Escorts students between the health room and classroom when indicated.
  4. Computerizes health information following in-service training.
  5. Attends students in the health room, utilizing universal precautions as necessary.
  6. Assist students with toileting including diapering if needed.
  7. Performs other duties including maintaining health records, photocopying, sending notices home to parents, filling Medicaid and other insurance forms.
  8. Participates in school staff activities as appropriate for a faculty member.
  9. Assists Principal/Headmaster in non-health paraprofessional duties in the absence of the school nurse.
  10. Performs other related duties as requested by the school nurse/principal/Headmaster/Assistant Director Health Services.

Qualifications:

 

Required:

  1. High school diploma or GED
  2. Forty-eight (48) Credit Hours of College Coursework or an Associate's Degree, or a passing score on one of the two following Formalized Standardized Assessments: ParaPro Assessment (http://www.ets.org/parapro/ ) or WorkKeys Certificate of Proficiency for Teacher Assistants (http://www.act.org/workkeys/profcert/index.html ).
  3. Demonstrated experience and ability working with administrators, teachers, students, and parents.
  4. Demonstrated experience  and ability in assisting with team instruction
  5. Good personal characteristics including self-discipline, maturity, self-confidence, professionalism, dedication, responsiveness to supervision.
  6. Valid driver's license and access to an automobile.
  7. Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

Preferred:

  1. Experience as a teacher, counselor, paraprofessional, or intern or trainee in a program for children and or adolescents.
  2. Bachelor's Degree.
  3. Certification as a teacher or license as a social worker.
  4. BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.

 

Terms:

BTU, contractual hourly rate
