Please note: In an effort to ensure student and staff safety during COVID-19, the Transportation Department has implemented the following:
- Monitors will be given face shields
- Hand sanitizer will be available on all buses
- Daily temperature checks
Reports to:
Principal/Headmaster of the assigned school and/or the Unit Leader for Special
Education Monitors
SPED Cab Monitors are assigned to monitor and assist students with special needs
while they are being transported to and from school or therapy appointments.
Responsibilities:
1. To cover a monitor-required route, you must board the vehicle before or at the same time as the first monitor-required student on the route and remain on the vehicle at all times until every monitor-required student has reached his or her stop.
2. Although you are also responsible for the general supervision of all students on the vehicle, your primary responsibility is to attend to the special needs of monitor-required students.
3. You should ride with the students in the back of the vehicle and not in the front seat unless only the front seat is available.
4. If necessary, you are required to assist students in and out of the vehicle.
5. You are required to set-up and collapse wheelchairs or other equipment when necessary in order to help students in and out of the vehicle.
6. As long as you are on board, you are required to check the vehicle to insure all students have exited at the appropriate stops.
7. You must exhibit proper behavior at all times. You are a role model and should not engage in horseplay or arguments with students.
8. You must ensure that all students wear seat belts.
9. Students should not be allowed to leave the vehicle anywhere other than their assigned stops. If a student leaves the vehicle without authorization, direct the driver to contact the dispatcher immediately.
10. Students must be prohibited from consuming food or beverages, smoking, or bringing radios on the vehicle. You must also abide by these rules.
11. In the event of absence, you must notify the school to which you are assigned and the Assistant SPED Monitor Unit Manager at the yard at least two hours prior to your scheduled reporting time for the morning and/or at least two hours prior to your scheduled reporting time for the afternoon.
12. You are responsible for performing other related duties as directed by your supervisors.
13. There are potential weight-lifting requirements. You may be required to assist students in wheelchairs on/off buses.
Qualifications - Required:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High School Diploma or GED
- City of Boston Residency
- Ability to enter/exit bus via steps repeatedly
Qualifications - Preferred:
- Previous experience working in a school setting and or with school aged children is preferred
