Boston Public Schools seeks a Program Director for the Performing Arts

 

REPORTS TO: BPS Executive Director for the Arts

 

Position Description

The Program Director for the Performing Arts provides district-wide leadership and support to schools in the following areas to ensure high-quality arts instruction in Music and Dance.  The Program Director will implement district, state and national Arts Standards, manage professional development, ongoing development and implementation of best practice assessment and instructional materials. 

 

The Program Director reports to the Executive Director for the Arts, and works collaboratively with the Visual Arts and Theater Content Specialist and the Instrument Technician.  This position shares supervisory responsibilities for the school based Arts Liaisons, assigned student teachers and department interns.

 

Position Responsibilities

Curriculum & Instruction Support:

  • Support and monitor the implementation of the district, state and national arts standards in individual schools and across the district. 
  • Manage on-going development of curriculum and assessment tools
  • Assist teachers in developing yearly goals and objectives, planning, resource development and evaluation
  • In-school observation and support of arts teachers
  • Implement a district-wide policy and program for student teaching in the arts that is rooted in the problems and possibilities of practice for urban arts teachers.
  • Work with other members of the Visual and Performing Arts team to evaluate effectiveness of in-school arts partners

Professional and Program Development

  • Develop, implement and evaluate effective year-round, citywide and school-based professional development program for music and dance teachers
  • Collaborate with local universities and community based programs and other internal departments to support the ongoing development, implementation and evaluation of workshops courses, institutes and other professional development opportunities
  • Monitor the effectiveness of performing art programs citywide, in partnership with the Executive Director for the Arts

Resource Management -

  • Coordinate the identification and adoption of high-quality instructional materials for the district
  • In collaboration with the Instrument Technician manage the distribution, collection, refurbishment, and inventory of materials, instruments and equipment.
  • Develop and manage content and resources for BPS arts website that support and enhance arts learning:

Festivals & Student Performances

  • Oversee the organization, implementation and evaluation of the annual city-wide Instrumental, Theater and Dance Festivals
  • Supervise citywide performance ensembles, including, but not limited to Citywide Chorus and Citywide Strings
  • Supervise and/or manage student showcasing and enrichment activities, including, but not limited to the annual arts festival; the district’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration; the Summer Arts Intensive program.

Perform other related duties as requested by the Executive Director for the Arts including:

  • Represent the BPS Arts Department at district meetings (i.e. Curriculum & Instruction team), programming meetings and events, school functions, and community arts events.
  • Represent the BPS Arts Department at local and national conferences directly related to performing arts curriculum, instruction and assessment.
  • Prepare and submit administrative documents, including, but not limited to weekly activity reports, periodic program reports, and supporting information for grant reports.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:

  • Bachelors degree and teaching certification in related arts disciplines
  • Certification for administration
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise as a teacher and administrator
  • Strong communication skills; verbal, written and presentation
  • Demonstrated success working with teachers and/or administrators in a leadership and professional development capacity
  • Demonstrated success collaborating with external agencies on the implementation of program and professional development initiatives
  • Proficiency in MS Office; Word, Excel, Google, including Google classroom, Powerpoint, effective use of technological tools for research and communication
  • Ability to work evenings on special projects/attend gatherings as related to responsibilities
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment 

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:

  • Advanced degree in related arts discipline or administration
  • Successful experience working in an urban setting
  • Strong background in instructional and management technology

 

TERMS: BASAS Group 11B, 225 days
