Overview:

 

The BPS Office of Expanded Learning Time (ELT) oversees an array of high-quality academic and enrichment programs outside of the school day that provide services for targeted student populations in every grade level across the district. The purpose of these programs is to provide a safe and engaging environment, increase academic achievement, and create a year-round system of learning in order to secure the pathway to high school graduation and college and career readiness. It also serves as a beneficial opportunity for BPS staff to participate in robust professional development, pilot new and innovative approaches to teaching, and enhance classroom instruction. Included in these programs are those within our Summer Learning Portfolio, Acceleration Academies (which operate during February and April Vacation weeks), Twilight (evening credit-recovery for High School Seniors), and online learning opportunities.

 

We are seeking to fill the position of Program Manager to support innovative teacher externship initiatives. The Program Manager will be tasked with the design, execution, and evaluation of these new programs, in conjunction with members of other district departments and with external partners and stakeholders.

 

Reports to: ELT Program Director

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage externship opportunities for teachers to build deeper understanding of industry needs in the Innovation Economy of Boston.
  • Develop a system-wide application, selection, placements and evaluation process for externships in the district.
  • Collaborate with community partners to iterate and scale year round opportunities for educators to determine their own pathways to accessing resources.
  • Develop a system to award PDPs and ALCs to those who show how the experience transforms learning in their classroom
  • Develop a standard agreement between BPS and Corporation/Businesses that articulates all  externship details, deliverables, payment details and other terms. This agreement would be required for each externship scheduled.
  • Develop a continuum of options for corporate interaction with schools and teachers culminating in student internship and teacher externships.
  • Engage partners in the develop of these options and provide graduated levels of involvement.

 

Professional Development -  

  • Collaborate with community partners to iterate and scale a year-round personalized learning experience for educators to self-determine their pathways to accessing the Innovation Economy of Boston.
  • Award PDPs and ALCs to those who show how the experience transforms learning in their classroom - BYOPD (build your own professional development)
  • Build deep partnerships between BPS schools and local institutions to close the opportunity gap that separates our students from real world experiences. These institutions include but are not limited to: cultural institutions, universities and colleges, community-based organizations, government, hospitals, and companies.

Qualifications - Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • 3-5 years professional experience
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Excellent analytical, research and critical thinking abilities
  • Strong communication skills
  • Passion for education and a commitment to equity, and specifically for improving learning and life outcomes for all students through the use of evidence based innovative practices including education technology
  • Commitment to an evidence-informed approach to program development with a continuous improvement approach
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

 

TERMS: Managerial Tier C, This position is subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.

NOTE:  School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year.  The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school. This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.

 

School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time.  In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
